Weekend Update: Rice, Beans, and Telephone Scams

Things here in Costa Rica are going well and there’s not too much to report. However, I did come across an interesting cooking blog post this week on a blog called “Cocina Costarricense” (“Costa Rican Cooking”).

Exhibit A: Gallo Pinto, Costa Rica’s national dish. The “Gallo Pinto” part is actually just the rice and beans, but I added that other stuff to make it less boring. Picture by Ryan Sitzman.

As you may remember, I’ve mentioned Costa Rica’s love for rice and beans before. In fact, it’s their national dish, and it even has a name: Gallo Pinto (“Painted Roster,” but don’t try to make sense of the name, since there’s no sense to be found there). It’s about as tasty as a fairly bland mixture of rice and beans can be, I suppose. But in any case, the cooking blog put gallo pinto into an empanada (which is kind of like a fried turnover, if I had to describe it). The guy also added cheese, and it does look quite appetizing, actually. Check it out if you’d like (the text is in Spanish, but the pictures are universal).

Finally, a strange anecdote. Angela got a call on Friday saying that she’d won a raffle! The caller said that they’d taken the names of “all the people who pay their phone bills on time” and that she’d won all sorts of crap like a 51″ flat screen TV, a microwave, and a “11-foot refrigerator” (too bad she’s only familiar with the metric system, since that last one should have definitely raised a red flag). In any case, the caller told her to call a specific number to claim her prizes. She even told the caller it sounded like a complete scam (in other words, she didn’t believe him at all–she’s not dumb!), but she was curious. So, she called the number and it turned out to be the number for the national women’s prison! Weird! I’m not sure what that means, but it’s the kind of stuff that seems Costa Rican, somehow, and I thought I’d share it here.

Exhibit B: Jailbird Angela. Perhaps an Angela from a parallel universe was just trying to communicate with the Angela in this universe? We may never know the answer.

So, that’s it for now. Have a nice week, and thanks for reading!
